Feasibility Study

Monk Mackenzie was approached to develop a feasibility study for a site in Brooklyn that was opposite the soon to be restored Gowanus Canal. The site contained an existing historic merchant building and the scheme needed to respond to this while optimising the development rights for the client.

The proposed scheme placed a block adjacent to the existing building, creating an external lane between the two. It then placed a further block above this to create the effect of stacked boxes while covering the external space on the site. Subtle references to the existing heritage building were made including the barrel vaulted brick soffits of both blocks and the delicate steel framed glazing.
