MMA were commissioned to study potential development options for the former Contemporary Gallery building at the corner of Lorne and Wellesley Streets in central Auckland.
The existing three level, 1916 heritage-listed building sits in the historic precinct of Auckland, neighbouring the Auckland Art Gallery, St James apartments and Khartoum place. Any addition to the building needed to respect the fabric of the existing building while quietly and elegantly contrasting with it.
The proposal added three new floors to the building but did so by completing the Edwardian tripartite façade with one additional floor while adding two more floors in the form of an elegant and highly detailed glass box.
The building was completed in its original form with additional height composed in an extremely discreet and sensitive manner.
