The Waiheke house is situated in the Surfdale area of Waiheke Island. It sits in an elevated cliff top position with panoramic views over Huruhi Bay and beyond. The lower level is set back beneath a cantilevered upper floor. The landscape is then designed to wrap around the base significantly reducing the perceived building height.

The house’s triangular form orientates the widest aperture to face the water maximising the views. A central courtyard connects both living and bedroom wings creating a sheltered outdoor space. Two layers of operable sliding doors provide the ability to create internal winter gardens or covered external decks as needed, allowing the occupant to easily adapt to the sites variable climatic conditions.

Cast in-situ concrete and stacked brick exterior materials are selected to age well over time and minimise maintenance. Internally, exposed timber roof framing and rendered walls provide a sense of warmth and handcrafted quality.
